UC Reciprocity for UCLA Recreation Facilities
Traveling throughout California during the holidays? Then, take advantage UC Reciprocity for students and Recreation members of all UC campuses to use the recreational sports facilities on another UC campus. UCLA students can now work out at Berkeley or Davis, and vice versa, UC students from those areas can work out here!
Throughout the UC system, campus recreational sport facilities and programs play a vital role in student life. Students are increasingly committed to their personal fitness routines, as they seek to balance their stressful academic lives with a healthier mind and body.
As students travel around the state, over breaks and holidays, they often want to continue their fitness routines, but to date, there has been no standard policy permitting students from one campus to use the recreational sport facilities at another campus. That changed June 1, 2005.
A policy of reciprocity is being adopted by the Recreational Sports Consortium in a one-year test pilot program. All UC Recreational Sports Departments agree that registered students from other UC campuses may use their campus facilities. This reciprocal agreement is subject to any required approval from individual governing and/or advisory boards and utilizing the following guidelines:
- Summer Quarter/Session – All UC students will be eligible to purchase summer passes as though they were continuing students at the campus they are visiting.
- During the academic year, students with valid1 UC student IDs will be admitted at no charge to recreational sports facilities system wide2. At specialty facilities, i.e. aquatic centers, equestrian centers, etc., the visiting students may participate by paying the standard campus student rate.
- Each campus is strongly encouraged to track usage by visiting UC students, by home campus, both to detect fraud and to be able to quantify and report how many students take advantage of this benefit.
- If at any time, use by visiting students significantly affects facilities and/or services at a campus, this pilot program may be modified3.
- Based on the results of the pilot, a decision will be made regarding a final student reciprocity policy.
- In the future, a similar program may be designed for faculty, staff, and other non-student members. In the meantime, visiting faculty and staff may purchase passes and memberships at any campus, at the local campus faculty and staff rate.
1 Currently, there is no easy way to confirm that a card from another campus is valid. The Rec Sports Consortium supports development of such a system. Until such a system is available, individual campuses will use their judgment in accepting a card as valid, always with an option to contact the originating campus for verification.
2 UC Berkeley students have to purchase a student membership to use the UC Berkeley recreational facilities after a grace period.
3 For example, if an excessive number of UC Berkeley students use the UCSF facility, due to its proximity to the Berkeley campus, UCSF may need to exclude UC Berkeley students from participating.
